Citizenship Eligibility Requirements
Naturalization is the process by which a foreign national is granted U.S. citizenship based on meeting specific eligibility requirements. Before a person can apply for naturalization or citizenship, they must meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 18 years of age at the time of filing
- File form N-400, Application for Naturalization
- Be a permanent resident (or green card holder) in the U.S. for at least 5 years
- Be able to prove you have lived in the state or United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) district in which you are applying
- Show continuous residence in the U.S. for a minimum of 5 years preceding the date of filing the application
- Show you have physically resided in the U.S. for at least 30 months out of the 5 years immediately preceding the date of filing the application
- Show a good understanding of basic English
- Must be able to read, write, and speak rudimentary English
- Show good moral character
- Demonstrate an understanding and abidance by the principles and ideals of the U.S. Constitution
If you meet all the above requirements, the naturalization process will begin. In most cases this process will include the following steps:
- Determine if the applicant is already a U.S. citizen
- Determine if the applicant meets all eligibility requirements
- Fill out and submit Form N-400, Application of Naturalization
- Make a fingerprinting appointment, if applicable
- Complete the citizenship interview
- Receive a decision from USCIS
- Receive a request to take the Oath of Allegiance
- Take the Oath of Allegiance
- Take your rights and responsibilities as a U.S. citizen seriously
